First week of July is here and the spring salmon are here in big numbers! The Campbell river hump down to Shelter pt area's are full of big herring and big springs! Fishing the hump on the ebb tide and down to Shelter on the flood using green/white cuttle fish hootchy and a chrome/brass Clendon Stewart have been working well It's mid June and the fish are here in big numbers! The salmon fishing is hot for chinook from 10-30 pounds, there is lots of coho in the 5 pound range with a good number of hatchery fish to keep! The fishing is great from Campbell River down to Kitty Coleman across to Grants reef. Its good to see many mix stocks of fish, out of a limit of 4 chinook on Saturday we had a white, marble and red flesh. All gear seems to be working for these fish, but the Clendon Stewart in chrome and Kermit Coyote spoons have worked well for the last couple weeks for me!
June 7/13 Nice spring salmon!
The last few weeks, Comox and Campbell River areas have had great fishing for spring salmon! Most of the fish are in the teens, but there is a good number in the twenty pound range also! Campbell River hump and Shelter Pt keep producing well.Kitty Coleman down to Cape Lazo area is full of herring, and some good salmon fishing! I have had luck on Clendon Stewart silver spoons,602 tomic 5 inch plugs, and green spatter back hootchies. The Dog Fish have moved in the shallows so the bait is put away for the rest of the season for me! Some good size chinook's showed up for the May long weekend! Campbell River area has slowed down, but running across the strait of Georgia to Grants reef and the north tip of Texada has been worth it. Good numbers of chinook with a few over 20 pounds have been coming in from those area's! Closer to home,Bates beach(Kitty Coleman) has turned on! Monday (May20) had calm sea's and good fishing. We landed our largest yet for 2013 season at 26 pounds!Just a sample of whats to come for the summer! Anchovies and Gater back green hootchy's along with Army Truck cuttle fish hootchy's are the ticket!
Nice spring salmon from Kitty Coleman on May 9
This past weeks weather has been incredible ,with temps in the mid twenty's and no wind. The salmon fishing has slowed a bit in numbers but the size of fish are getting bigger, with some in the twenty pound range hitting the dock! The Coho that have called Bates beach area home all winter are growing in size and spreading down past Comox.I caught many this past week up to four pounds! There is a good mix of medium herring and needle fish in the belly's of these salmon so most gear like 4" spoons,Hootchy's both cuttle fish and needle fish have been producing.I have been using anchovies with good success also. Mid may usually is the start time of the big push of chinook's in our area.Places like Campbell River Hump,Bates Beach(Kitty Coleman)and Sentry Shoals can produce good numbers of fish! Sean Fredrickson with a nice spring(may 3/13 Shelter Pt and the CR hump keep on producing some great chinook. There seems to be lots of needle fish around so I was using small 4" anchovies and glo/green needle fish hootchies, the chovies produced the best! Kitty Coleman hump has fished well the last few days for some nice chinook and small coho. Great weather and fresh fish!!! The fishing remains steady around the Hump and Shelter Pt.Some nice chinook's in the low teens have been coming in the last few days, along with lots of smaller size. All the fish have had belly's full of needle fish,so small 3" spoons and needle fish hootchy's in green spatter back have been working.
I spent the hole day Monday looking for halibut in the northern straight of Georgia with no luck, released some nice ling cod though! Chinook fishing around Campbell river is starting to pick up with some better size and numbers coming in.Early morning or a few hours before dark fishing the flood tide and high slack seem to be the best.Small anchovies behind a flasher or without a flasher have been producing along with 3.5-4 inch chrome/green spoons. Shelter pt out in 200ft,down to Salmon pt have been the spots. Sentrey Shoals has also produced some chinook the last few days along with many small coho. Crabbing is good but still a few soft shell to pick through. Prawn fishing is hit or miss, last week we spent a day out pulling traps, some sets were good and some not so good... Went out today to fish a bunch a herring to use for bait for halibut and lings this coming season.
There is huge schools of herring from Goose Spit out to Lazo,so no need to travel far!I was using jigs but a "herring rake" would have been the ticket today! The boat will be back in the water at the end of the month. Some good salmon fishing starts in April along with open halibut and prawn and crab fishing! Fishing for winter chinooks is still great from southern Campbell River down to Hornby Island and all points in between!
From Salmon point trolling up to Shelter Pt in anywhere from 180' to 240' of water, fishing close to bottom has been producing. 5" plugs,green/white hootchie's and anchovies have been the hot lures. Bates beach was a little slower this past weekend (Jan 19)still producing a few nice chinook though! The northern strait of Geogia is looking healthy, lots of herring and krill around and thousands of "Blue Backs"small coho from 2-3 pounds...It should be a great 2013 season! |
