We had a calm afternoon on Friday Dec 14,flat water and sunshine!
I started fishing around noon off Willow point in 200 ft of water.I decided to run achovies behind flashers @ 160 and 180 feet. The first chinook was on and in the cooler in the first ten minutes! The fishing was great all afternoon with many fish landed,we kept 4 nice chinooks from 10 to 14 pounds... I fished down at the Bates beach area last weekend with good results also, its nice to see all these feeder chinooks around and a bigger than average size for this time of year! With the chum fishery coming to a end the winter chinook fishing starts.
We had a break in the weather yesterday(Nov 5) ,so it was time to get out for a few hours trolling Bates Beach.Ended up with a nice 12 pound hatchery and a under size release. Fishing deep and fast,250ft and 3mph troll with glo/green needle fish seemed to do the trick! August was a very busy month with the best chinook fishing I have seen in years! The best lures for me this year seemed to be the Blue Meenie hootchy and the 602 Tomic plug, with the plug doing well in the morning and Hootchy better in the afternoon. We are in the first week of September now and there is still some good size chinook to be had mixed in with smaller feeder fish. Campbell River hump,Kitty Coleman hump and around Comox are still producing.Fishing gear up shallow, and some deep seems to be the ticket. The Kitty Coleman(Bates Beach) area has produced many nice chinook over the last week. Most fish weigh in the teens and low twenty's,with some wopper's mixed in as well.Friday July 27 we had over 20 springs to the boat with two over 30 pounds and the rest of the limit in the mid twenty's! The cuttle fish hootchy in blue and green's,army truck with a 36 inch leader have been working well.Spoons have produced a few but not as well as the hootchy. Sentry Shoals is warming up also, lots of bait brings the salmon in.The 180ft contour on the south end has produced some good numbers the last few days! Campbell River Hump has been slow for the last week but yesterday that changed...some nice chinooks were taken. Fishing has been incredible the past two weeks. Lots of chinooks in the mid to high twenties and more tyee's (over 30lb's) than I have seen in these parts in a long time! The Campbell River hump has been on fire the last few days (July 10-13) The deeper water around the "hump" has been producing well for me. Find the bait and you will find the fish! I found a huge bait ball at 380 feet today and dropped my gear into it and had a fish on right away, so make sure you have lots of cable on your riggers!!! They are hitting most gear, but the cuttle fish hootchy in greens and blues seem to be the go to lures. Bates beach slowed a bit but will be turning on with all the fish heading south from Campbell river I'm sure! Fishing is still great around Comox and south Campbell River! Fishing off Willow point and the CR hump has produced many nice chinook the last few days. The 180ft contour in front of the Oyster River up to Salmon point is worth trolling, find the bait and you will find the salmon! Kitty Coleman hump is fishing well, but with the big tides over the weekend, putting your time in and waiting for the bite to come on is key to success! Hootchy's in green/glow or blue/green(non glow)are working well along with 5 inch Coyote spoons in crome/blue. Fishing is still good for chinooks with plenty of fish weighing in the teens and a good number over 20 pounds....I have heard of a few over 30(Tyee)also!
Kitty Coleman hump has bin hot for a few weeks now.The deeper water around the hump have been holding fish 180-240ft ,try any green/glo hootchy with a 30 inch leader behind green/glo flasher...Great combo! Campbell River hump is starting to produce the same numbers of fish as KittyColeman now.The same hoochy/flasher works well here, but spoons and plugs will get the job done also! Its the first week of june and like last year at this time the fish are here!
The past few days has produced many fish over 20 pounds, along with lots in the teens! Fishing north of Campbell river has been slow, most of the "hot spots" have been around the Campbell hump down to the south end of Hornby Island. The hump off Bates beach has been good the last few days. Most fish have bin caught 30 to 40 feet off bottom using mostly hootchies with a 36 inch leader.Spoons in a 5 inch size 6 feet behind a flasher have worked well also. The dog fish(mud sharks) are showing up now so no more fishing bait for me! My "spring special" is still on till mid june,so book now while the fishing is HOT!!! Every few years we get nice weather on the May long weekend, and this was one of them! The Bates beach hump is still producing a few nice chinooks, but it seems the big numbers have moved to were the herring are.I found huge amounts of herring in front of the Oyster river around the 200ft contour. We had some good action with fish up to 22 pounds caught on "Blood&Bones"hootchies and flasher and anchovie with a 6 foot leader. We went out after bottom fish sunday and ended up with some nice Red Snapper,Lingcod and rockfish. Also some crab and prawns to make a fine meal! A friend of mine got himself a 70 pound halibut off the Campbell River hump over the weekend, seems to be a few showing up!!!!I will be heading out to try halibut tomorrow! Salmon fishing has really turned on around the Comox valley and Campbell river!!! This past weekend we had great fun landing many chinooks weighing into the teens.Lots of herring around still so bait and hootchys working well.
Crabbing remains excellent and prawn fishing has slowed a bit after the commercial opening, but we still got a big feed for my guests yesterday! |
