Comox/Campbell River fishing report

6/30/2011

Salmon fishing has been great all spring and now at the end of june its even better!
Lots of chinook in the low to mid teens are being caught, and a good number of twenty plus pound fish are showing up. There has been a hand full of tyee's brought in in the last few days. A nice 32lb came in off Bates beach on June 28!
There is a great abundance of herring in the area as well as needle fish. Spoons in the 4 inch range have been working great behind a flasher with a 5ft leader. Big cuttlefish hootchy's in green/glo or green/blue combo have been producing lots of fish. I use 50lb test line and a short 36" leader behind the flasher, this gives it lots of action!
Bait such as anchovies have been working great also, but the Dogfish(mud shark) are starting to show up and they love bait and wrecking gear with their sharp teeth!
There is a few coho showing up already and still the odd Halibut coming in, most of these are caught while trolling deep for chinooks.

Fishing out of Salmon Point Marina gives us the benefit of fishing many areas. Heading down to Bates Beach hump takes around 20 minutes. This spot has been holding lots of fish lately, most fish are deep from 170-220ft.
The Campbell River "hump" is only a few minutes away and has been producing many good size chinooks. This spot is best fished on a ebb tide, getting down deep is the ticket here also!
Francisco point off the south east side of Quadra Island is allso another place worth trying.
Or if you dont want to go far, right out front of the marina in 100-150 feet produced a few nice fish for me a few days ago!

Tight Lines!
